So, You Want To See America

Image
I am not this cool.  If you know me, and I don't expect you know me all that well, you would realize one of my longtime dreams is to travel across America a la Jack Kerouac. Well, I did that. Recently. In a Greyhound. (Not quite the dream, per se).  I traveled to Phoenix from Erie, PA in a two-day journey we could only call "hellish." Originally it would have been roundtrip, but a work emergency caused me to miss my first bus. I flew home, but not without somehow losing my glasses in the progress. (Luck? What's that?) I'm about to describe to you this journey in the only way I know how:  vaguely passive-aggressive blogging. Chapter 1: Yelling At Old Women And Fixing Some Lady's Blackberry I left Erie on a cold and brisk Friday afternoon. I was sick to begin with- the weather took a toll on my now warm-weather-acclimated system, so I didn't even have much of a "vacation" to begin with. Plus, I had romanticized my whole trip home. ON THE ROAD: the ultimately questionable movie

This is one of my favorite books of all time, so I'm torn. Very torn. the one kid does look like Kerouac, though!

things that might make you cry this Thursday!

while you were protesting for your freedom...... 1.) acclaimed band 3OH3!, the next Beatles and/or Led Zeppelin, are coming to Erie at Penn State Behrend on April 13 th . tickets are like 20 - 25 dollars, which is so acceptable for a band that duets with Ke $ha and writes lyrics like Bob Dylan. 2.) I am back from Detroit. I feel like two days of my life are now gone? hmmhaw . no word on the Seattle job yet, even though I believe the interview went well. I am also weighing my options for Pittsburgh, Sweden and New York. eh, stay tuned to see where I end up. I have promising prospects in all. 3.) highlight of Seattle: at a pot luck, talking to the girl I was staying with, somewhat drunk on much better beer than I'm used to, OH MY GOD, THAT FIONA APPLE? I guess drunken encounters are 10x better when you are ranting about your favorite singer. 4.) Interpol is a surprisingly strong band to see live. despite the exit of Carlos D, they played the longest show I have yet to have gone to....

why i still love jack kerouac

He would go on for hours, often drunk, to friends and strangers about his method. Allen Ginsberg, initially unimpressed, would later be one of its great proponents, and indeed, he was apparently influenced by Kerouac's free flowing prose method of writing in the composition of his masterpiece "Howl." It was at about the time that Kerouac wrote The Subterraneans that he was approached by Ginsberg and others to formally explicate exactly how he wrote it; how he did Spontaneous Prose. Among the writings he set down specifically about his Spontaneous Prose method, the most concise would be Belief and Technique for Modern Prose, a list of thirty "essentials." Scribbled secret notebooks, and wild typewritten pages, for your own joy Submissive to everything, open, listening Try never get drunk outside your own house Be in love with your life Something that you feel will find its own form Be crazy dumbsaint of the mind Blow as deep as you want to blow Write what you wan...
