“Golden” - Zella Day (My Song of This Cursed Summer)

Image
Zella Day is quite the genrebender, and I'm here for it. Although she tends to stay on the pop side of the mainstream music lane, she isn't afraid to embrace all kinds of retro vibes a lot of her peers would balk at. Earlier this year, I highlighted her delicate track "Holocene" featuring the formidable Weyes Blood. And now, I really need you to listen to "Golden," which would be this summer's undisputed Top 40 anthem if modern pop radio had any sense of justice. How anyone can resist this song's delightful disco airiness is beyond me. Last summer, we had Harry Styles' "Golden." This summer, we have Zella's.  Other singles Arizona-bred Zeyes Blood has released this year include "Girls" and "Dance For Love." Her next album "Sunday in Heaven" is set to come out later this year, too. (And I personally can't wait.)

PERSON OF THE YEAR 2011

Image
In the past, I haven't taken these that seriously. Please note  in 2010 it was Ke$ha in 2009 it was the Dutch dude that saved that airplane  so it'd be tempting for me to fall BACK in that pattern. but this year I wanted it to be a little different. I wanted to take this seriously. :/ Time magazine picked 2011 as the year of the protester. Well said, Time magazine . But one person's story really touched me this year. At the risk of wading into Mitch Albom territory here, this one person makes me want to be a better person. as life is short, things can change in a second, and trying to stand for something positive can mean more than we might ever know. I had no idea who Gabrielle Giffords was before January 8 2011. And in all honesty, I almost wish that was still the case. but on Jan. 8, a psycho came and shot up her "Congress On Your Corner" event. Several people died during this uncalled for tragedy, including a little girl who was born on September 11, 2011. One...

two things

I love Australians . Australians and Finns are my favorite people. do you know who I don't like? people from Malta. where the fuck is Malta anyway. WELL. Australia is having a lottttt of problems with floods. haven't you heard? ARE THESE END TIMES? and also, also also also, if you have some semblance of a conscious, you could perhaps donate a little to Congresswoman Giffords ' favorite charity . I am not speaking big donations for either of these groups. I just feel bad that I can't do more to help, you know? you do what you can. p.s. speaking of Australians, I feel like giving Ladyhawke another go. etc. BRAZIL

illegal immigration and dora on a sunday morning

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7751612/Dora-the-Explorer-used-in-anti-immigration-campaign.html I saw this image in the newspaper a few days ago, which left a look like this :/ on my face. there was this REALLY strong editorial about illegal immigration and how President Obama has managed to deport more illegals than Bush so far (!!!) and how also we seem to be using illegal immigrants as a clutch for our economic problems. the scapegoat, so to speak (goat! I just watched Drag Me To Hell again last night! not a profane goat!). I think that yes getting into this country illegally is wrong, but there's a lot of reasons people have to do this and some people go through absolute hell to get here. what do I think about the fence in Arizona? no good no good no good. I see both sides of this debate clearly- but like, in the case of said editorial, there was a girl who was a top student at a top university who came to this country as a small child, was a member ...
