St. Patrick's Day Songs: #4 The Humors of Scariff

Image
Back in 2009, I was rather obsessed with the group "Orthodox Celts," the famed Celtic band from Belgrade, Serbia. They first appeared on The UC in this choppy article I wrote almost two years ago. CLICK HERE Orthodox Celts put out a rendition of this song, which I also learned in 2009. Thanks to these guys. CLICK HERE for THESE GUYS. During the end of my failed tenure as a music student, I attempted to learn "The Humors of Scariff," and I gained a new respect. I admit it is much more difficult to play than it sounds. In response to a comment about me chilling out: "I have chilled out. Read the shit in my links, and you'll read someone who needs to chill out." QATFYG: What is your best memory of 2009?

Irish Party Music: Paddy Carty's/The Beauty Spot

As we get closer to St. Patrick’s Day, we have many more gems and emeralds to spread around. This particular one is a Useless Critic upload, available on TheUselessCritic youtube channel. It got almost no views and plays, and the world is missing out. I first heard these two songs from Library CD from the “Muldoon Public Library” in Anchorage Alaska. “Paddy Carty’s” is an amazing song. That’s the best way to explain it. If you are searching for some serious Irish music, try this one out. When I first heard this, the words that came to mind to describe it were “Irish Party Music.” It sounds like a festive Irish pub or dance hall just going wild. Energy. Passion. and Celebration. The opening notes just explode into a wave of creativity. QATFYG: What is your Party Music? Have you ever been to an Irish party? If you are interested in reading a segment from my unfinished novel "Emeralds, Africans, and Eating with Chopsticks," drop me a line.

Dear Old Donegal: St. Patrick's Day Spirit Begins on The UC

Hello March. How is 2012 treating you? To kick off the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day, we’ll start with some classic traditional Irish songs. I first heard this song when I was around 16 or 17. It instantly reminded me of a friend from high school. I used to always attach songs to the personalities of my friends. What stood out to me first about this song were the lively characteristics, so much pleasantry. However, the first time I heard it years ago, I was surprised by the sound of the Irish accordion on that particular version. It was in 2011 that I found the version featured above, and it became one of my favorite songs of the year. This version just adds some character touches that make it stand out above the others. This song tells a story. Much like many classic Irish songs, it shares a small piece of Irish heritage and folklore. The first time I heard this version, I misheard the lyrics as “…and this is your sister Cait, she’s the girl you used to shag down by the garden gate.” I w...

Favorite Christmas Carols and or Songs

Image
So, QATFYG: I was just wondering does anyone have a favorite Christmas carol and or song? I do not really pick favs with this genre, but one that I love is "O Holy Night," and since I love Irish music, here is that song performed by Celtic Women. Oh yes, I went there. Happy Holidays.

My Year of Music

So a long time ago, I wrote a post on musical phases. “Take me back to the year of the Bass.” Everyone goes through musical phases, and for my music fads change almost every year. Recap on Nader Bouberhan’s Musical Endeavors/Youtube Diary: 2007: Nothing but Bass Guitarists 2008: World Music and Listening to Chocolate Rain by Tay Zonday and Snow’s Informer on repeat. 2009: Broadway Musicals with numerous tracks from Davis Gaines. The only constant in all of these years has been my obsession with Irish melodies via Luke Kelly, The Dubliners, and various artists and guitarists on the internet. But as for the year 2010, it is hard for me to place an exact genre. One of the main reasons is now in Algeria, I have no connection with my youtube favs thanks for faulty internet. However, in addition to my beloved Emerald Isle reels and jigs (hearts to you Michael King), This year has been a combination of….. Comedy Rock This includes Cars Can Be Blue, the Arrogant Worms, and of course Steven Lyn...

Champion of the Irish Flute

Image
In a previous post I stated that this year I've been listening to a lot Irish melodies. Well, this morning I heard a FANTASTIC Irish flute player named Michael King. He does a few reels in this video, and watch the accompanying guitarist. He forms some really good chords. Oh and the title isn't a joke. Michael King is a real deal champion on Irish Flute. Rock on! Or Folk On rather. QATFYG: In this video do the first few notes of the reel sound like "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas? HERE! Michael King...Playin Da Flute
