Death Metal Blog Post by Nader Bouberhan

Death Metal Blog Post

So this is a post that is bringing back a time in life that still exists.
Wait, that doesn’t make any sense.

I think what I was trying to say is during many years of High School, while other people were off having gratuitous social lives, I was at home listening to hours and hours of death metal.
I looked at myself as a not only a pish posh metal fanatic, but rather a philosopher and musicologist in my Death Metal obsession.
--Now, this is the point where I get to sound even more like screwball mush. I don’t listen to Death Metal because of any form of anger, masochism, or unfriendliness. I like to listen to this type of music when I am excited, but it is more than that. Everyone always seems to lump Death Metal in with anger and hatred…..and most of the time they have the right to do so. But the connection I have with this genre is an appreciation of the most extreme moments in life, an appreciation to see just how heavy music can get and to find art where most people only hear discontent.

Nader Bouberhan’s Top 5, 6, or 7 Death Metal Albums….For Now.

As always, the numbers are meaningless.

Napalm Death-- Breed to Breathe
Song: Breed to Breathe

I could have picked a different album from Napalm Death, and this is really an EP, but it was the first CD from these legends that I owned. If you want the purity of Death Metal, this band has the sound. Some of their earlier stuff leans toward the grindcore genre, but this album shows some true death metal arrangements. Their music is like molding a world out of clay, baking it in the world’s hottest kiln, and smashing it with an axe. This was the band that pulled me into the genre of Death Metal, and for them I owe gratitude.

Daylight Dies—No Reply

There are some bands that just change you. They play music that speaks to you without saying a word. They compose music that is just for you in so many ways. and for me that band was Daylight Dies. Their sound is what I was like all the time. I was one of the few people I knew that listened to them, but their songs are so well composed. They enter into the melodic death metal that is both rough yet stark.
The song “I Wait” from the No Reply album has changed me indeed.

Grave – It’s a tie, Into the Grave, Back from the Grave

This band is for Brittany Kemp. I say that because they are Swedish. They are skilled performers, and they play in a way that I love. So many metal bands just go over the top with squealing screaming vocals and crashing drums that sounds more like soppy emotional hardcore coughing, but “Grave” provides some of the perfect metal combinations. Along with Napalm Death they have one of the most pure metal sounds out there.

Macabre – Dahmer

This song is Hitchhiker.
I mentioned this band during my albums of life, and I have to bring up this album again. It is well-composed, and the best way to describe it is the raw. It is raw metal that has both quality, intrigue, and character. Their songs are full of creativity, and they show off raw metal skill.

Gorguts – From Wisdom to Hate
Song: Elusive Treasures

A lot of the bands on my short list are on here because of their strong and powerful compositions, but I am putting up this album from Gorguts because it is just plain fun. There might be other more popular albums from Gorguts, but this Quebecois Death Metal combination creates the moment where pain meets pleasure in that age old knot of perversity, and in some ways for me that is what Death Metal is all about.

And of course, I will show some major respect to the Canadian death metal/grindcore band “Abuse,” who was probably the first band that pulled me into the grindcore stuff. Because of them I am a member of the facebook group Grind as Fu£k. I did not feature an album from them because I was only caught up in a few of their songs. But I came home from school everyday in the eighth grade and would listen to these guys. Thanks for the good times.

QATFYG: So world, who has the better stuff? AWM or Moi?

I will give him wicked props for including Morbid Angel and Goatwhore into the list. It has been so long since I have even heard the name Goatwhore, but those are also some good memories. He knows his stuff well.

  1. thank you for your consideration Al! I'm disappointed to see no Carpenters or Osmonds on either lists.

"Mon Soleil" - Ashley Park

If there's anything people take away from my piss-poor legacy, I hope it's what a huge, unabashed fan of "Emily in Paris" I am and will continue to be. People love "90 Day Fiancee," "The Bachelor," and other garbage - allow me "Emily," which is at least harmless, kind of goofy fluff (which does, unfortunately, lean into some stereotypes, as the country of Ukraine knows ). I have already watched Season 2 twice. And honestly my favorite part of this show (despite my crush on Camille Razart and Lily Collins channeling Audrey Hepburn hardcore ) is Ashley Park. This woman has superstar written all over her. She's a bona fide Broadway star, and "Emily in Paris" has served as her pivot into the zeitgeist.  "Emily in Paris" is also showcasing her vocal prowess front and center this season, with her covering BTS, "All By Myself," "Sympathtique," and Marilyn Monroe. But the real standout performance is th

Appropriate Holiday Gift Ideas for the Single Lady

While some people may see it as a drag, there are plenty of benefits to being single during the holiday season. During this time of the year, there are tons of parties you can attend that you may not have had the opportunity to if you were in a relationship. There’s also not as much stress on you as a single gal during the holidays because you don’t have to shop for your partner and extended family members  or  stress over where to eat Christmas dinner.  Not everyone sees the bright side of being fancy free during the holidays, and, tragically, they aren't afraid to let us single ladies know. Not only are single women subjected to even more harassment and ridicule during the holiday season, they’re also given the most obnoxious gifts by those who can’t comprehend how anyone can be both happy and single. Whether it’s a self-help book (desperately) trying to reinforce how great is to be single or the gift of a year-long subscription to Match.com , single women are presented with

Give JR a Break

Recently, I've been reading some sites that have criticized James Roday, the lead actor on the USA show PSYCH for an apparent weight gain. But you know what? Who gives a flying fizzle stick if James Roday is slightly larger than he was 4 years ago. Apparently, it wasn't enough to scare away his current girlfriend/ co-star Maggie Lawson. (Who is one hell of a Catch!) And NO they are not engaged. That seems to be nothing more than a rumor, but there is a very high chance of it happening in the near future. Anyway, as long as PSYCH continues to entertain I don't mind about James Roday's waist. He, and Dule Hill, and Corbin Bernson too, can eat all the fried broccoli they want. The last episode of PSYCH wasn't so smashing, but I don't blame it on dietary issues. QATFYG: Are you keeping up with Psych? And who is hotter, James Roday or Maggie Lawson? (Trick Question but idk why) PS: If you have heard any more news on Roday and Lawson becoming Roday-Lawson, send it
